The Chang Bai is a very productive female variety of frost hardy kiwi with unique bright green, heart-shaped fruits and excellent sweet taste. It is one of the largest Actinidia arguta kiwis. The plant is vigorous, requiring a strong support to climb.
Origin: seedling of the cultivar Qui, selected near the border of North Korea from the wild in Chang Bai Mountains. Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agriculture.
Vigour: strong, climbing, needs a solid climbing support. Vigorous vine can grow up to 8 meters high. The leaves are oval, dark green.
Blossom: late-flowering variety, blooms in May to June. It can be pollinated by hardy arguta males and early-blooming fuzzy deliciosa males alike.
Fruit: produces clusters of bright green, smooth-skinned, flattened, heart-shaped fruits. Typically ranges from 4-5 cm in length and weighs up to 20g. Fruits can be eaten whole like a grape.
Pulp: firm, green, juicy with small seeds
Taste: delicious, excellent sweet and juicy without any acidity when the fruits are harvested at full maturity
Harvest season: fruits ripen in October. It takes 3-5 years to begin flowering and fruiting. With a sturdy trellis and regular pruning can yield over 45 kg of fruit per plant. Plant 3-6 meters apart.
Disease resistance: generally considered to be resistant to significant pests and diseases
Frost resistance: it comes from a cold mountainous region and offers the same durable winter hardiness as other hardy arguta kiwis. It can withstand frosts down to -30°C.
