Variety bred in the French region of Ardèche, a selection of hybrid plants derived from the free pollination of the Japanese chestnut Castanea crenata and the European chestnut Castanea sativa. The variety was registered in 1986. The tree has a strong root system, it is also suitable as a rootstock for good compatibility with other chestnut varieties. This variety can be grown up to 300 m above sea level.
Origin: Castanea crenata x Castanea sativa
Vigour: moderate, compact, adult trees can reach a size of about 8 m.
Blossom: cross-pollinate, therefore requires the presence of a pollinator in its vicinity, for example different varieties of Castanea sativa or hybrids of C.sativa x C.crenata
Fruit: large to very large, shiny, mahogany red. The trees have an early yield onset after planting.
Harvest season: mid-early to mid-late, October. Chestnuts can be stored without refrigeration for about 4 weeks. For long-term storage, they should be placed in a refrigerator at a temperature range of -1°C to 4°C. Wrapping them in a plastic bag will prevent drying out and loss of quality.
Disease and frost resistance: resistant to parasitic fungus Phytophthora ramorum, frost hardy
Usage: for commercial cultivation and in home gardens
We draw your attention to the quarantine pest of the sweet chestnut, Dryocosmus kuriphilus, which appeared for the first time in Central Europe.
